We’re finally coming together for our first in-person event—FOLKLIFE Live!
In the support of local and independent publishing, FOLKLIFE Live! aims to celebrate living close to the earth, with intention, and creativity.
Taking place Saturday August 27th from 3-10pm on a Salt Spring Island Mount Maxwell farm, it features rockin’ bands such as Avro (replacing Jack Garton and the Demon Squadron due to sickness), Caleb Hart & Co, and Sarah Osborne, Indigenous dance group The Young Wolves, readings from fabulous FOLKLIFE writers, family activities, and all ending with ecstatic dance from Shauna Devlin.
Tickets will go fast, so don't miss it!
Postponed from our April 2020 FOLKLIFE launch event, this is our inaugural FOLKLIFE event, and we’re grateful to hold this outdoor event on the Coast Salish Territory of the Tsa'wout Territory.
By coming to FOLKLIFE Live!, you’re not only going to have a great time and support local businesses, makers, writers, and artists, but you’re saying that independent local publishing matters. That our stories matter. Print publishing is not known to be a break-even business, especially when we solely print and hire locally, but your stories matter, and we strive to continue using our time, skills, and passion to get them into the world.
Things to know before you go!
Address is 201 Wright Road. (Directions do come up on Maps but here they are as well: Come up Cranberry Road off of Fulford Ganges Road. Turn left on Maxwell (you’ll see community farm stand at the top of the road). Turn left at Wright Road (if you go right here, you go up the mountain). Go past the spray-painted sign that says 201, and it's the small drive on your left - The FOLKLIFE Live! signs will guide you!)
Bring something to sit on (blanket or chair). If it’s a tall chair, please consider putting it further to the back of the audience so everyone can see.
Sunscreen and hat. It shows a cloudier day, which is great, but always better to be prepared.
Water bottle or cup - we will have a water refilling station.
Mountainview Bakery has provided a pre-order picnic option (meal choice due today if you’d like to go this route), but they will have some goodies available onsite, including non-alcoholic beverages.
BYOB. If you would like to enjoy your own beverage, please do go ahead and bring it. Please have a ride home planned, if needed. We recommend no glass.
There is a waste station, so please dispose of everything appropriately. We want to be able to continue hosting events at the generously-offered Butterstone Farm.
Leashed, well-behaved dogs are allowed.
There will be a 50/50 (so bring some cash!) and mags for sale if you're missing any volumes! (volume 1 is only available for pre-order at the moment).
Tickets will be for sale at the door (tell your friends).
If you purchased a ticket, your name will be on the list at the door. Kids 12 and under are free and they do not need to be on the list.
Jack Garton is unfortunately sick with COVID and has had to cancel. We managed to find a replacement group. They’re called Avro, from Denman Island. They're super stoked to be joining us, and we're happy to have 'em!
It might sway a bit but below is the schedule for the evening! If you can, we highly recommend staying to the end, as Caleb Hart is a great time, and some real good soul to dance to! If you have to leave Salt Spring that night, the last two ferries from Vesuvius to Crofton are 8:30pm and 9:30pm. And from Fulford to Swartz Bay is 7:50.
